St Bede’s Warm-up

WRITTEN BY LAZERS
names edited by Hilts

Trivia fandom arrived to see if the Bar could extend their winning streak to 3, but instead they were inundated with Valentine-themed questions and challenges. With a slightly different crowd, the evening could have turned very gay.

The competition: Bar, Kelly’s Birthday, Jungle Fever, and BDB

J&B represented by: Chemical Man, Stix, Hilts, Dragon, Gf and Lazers
First Half: TV/Mixed-Up/Sports Valentine

Cub pitcher Sean Marshall’s wife is a morning TV host is what southwest city?
Main host of “Unsolved Mysteries” throughout most of its run?
“Love thy neighbor as thyself”- from which book of the Bible?
From 1980-82, Seinfeld creator Larry David was a regular on what show?
1989-90- Top three sitcoms (2 NBC, 1 ABC)?
From 1974-75, played Ah Chew on “Sanford & Son”?

Benkowski, after being hazed about a Patrick Lalime marriage question: “That’s Sports Valentine. I told you at the fucking beginning.”

J&B record in Drink Faster contests (both of tonight’s were Ladies Only, one against the Bar and one against Kelly’s Birthday): 1-1 (season record 1-2).

Another example of the valentine theme: “Lose 100 points and your turn, OR hug two players from two other teams.” Fortunately, J&B was not faced with this one.

Scores at the half: Kelly’s Birthday 1250 J&B 1060 BDB 720 Bar 400 Jungle Fever was the low score

Second Half: Baseball/Chicago Mob/People Magazine Best/Worst Dressed All-Time

Primary leader of Chicago mob from 1944-1992?
Beloved actor born in 1963, on the “what a mess” dressed list?
Only royalty in the all-time worst dressed list?
(BDB guess: Queen Latifah)

J&B escapes without any damage on a question looking for the number of extra-base hits Derrek Lee had in 2005. Benkowski gave Lee’s overall batting average, from which Chemical Man tried to estimate the total number of hits he probably had. Accidentally, that total number was initially tossed out as an answer, but the usually dog-eared Benkowski did not catch it. J&B quickly amends its answer to one close enough to get the points. So- number of extra-base hits Derrek Lee had in 2005 (overall average .335)?

One of People’s categories for the all-time worst dressed list was “a league of their own”- Benkowski looks for the two female entertainers on this list, giving their birth years as a clue. Benkowski then mentions that this has nothing to do with the movie “A League of Their Own.” Then one of the answers turns out to be Madonna, who actually is in the movie “A League of Their Own”. Sheesh.

Early on, it was apparent that Kearney Meats was surly on this night (he once bitched to Benkowski that J&B had already had three correct answers in a row and should lose control, even though we had answered only the last question). For a second half “throw the ball” trick, Meats greatly staggered and stumbled over to the throw line. Missing his throw, he swats the plastic menu holder off a nearby table, and he topples over a chair on the way back to his seat. I think Trophy told him to pick it up, as I heard Meats say, “You work here, you pick it up.” Man, was he hammered.

J&B had at least 1 hat trick tonight.

Scores after two halves: Kelly’s Birthday 2090 J&B 1730 BDB 1690 Bar 940 Jungle Fever 810

Choice of Final Category: TV of the Late 90s, MTV Awards, or 2008 Grammy Awards

J&B, Bar, and Kelly’s Birthday select the 90s TV category, while the other two teams select MTV.

2 of 3 wins wager. All 3 correct wins 3000 bonus points.

J&B wagers 1651 in order to protect against the team in 3rd place.

90s TV: For the 1997-98 season, Fox had 3 shows rated in the top 30 (at #19, #23 and #30)- name them.

MTV: name the songs for the following clues-
1995 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (assumed Video of the Year)
1998 Madonna (Best Female)
2001 Alicia Keys (Best New Artist)

Gang?

Bar- 940- 90s TV- guesses The Simpsons (correct), Party of Five (no), and The X-Files (correct)- wagered it all- up to 1880.

BDB- 1690- MTV- guesses Last Dance (no), Like A Prayer (no), and Fallin’ (correct)- wagered it all- thanks for playing.

J&B- 1730- 90s TV- guesses The Simpsons (correct), The X-Files (correct), and King of the Hill (correct)- wagered 1651 plus bonus- up to 6381.

Whoo!

Kelly’s Birthday- 2090- 90s TV- guesses The Simpsons (correct), Beverly Hills 90210 (no), and Melrose Place (no)- wagered 1575- down to 715 (per Benkowski math), or 515 (per real math).

With a solid team effort, J&B pounds the competition for its first win of the 2008 season.

Update on upcoming trivia events:

St Bede’s (February 23rd)- next week we should firm up our final roster. Hilts will confirm the starting time. It is assumed we can bring food but have to purchase drinks there.

TC Pub (February 28th)- I am “out”.

The Castle (March 1st)- Benkowski is running a special trivia event at The Castle (5700 W 79th Street)- March 1st at 7:00 pm. Cost is $80 per team with a max of 6 teams. Rosters of 8-10 people. I think the entry fee included food, as well as trivia and entertainment by Zach and Ben. Winners get $150. If J&B is going to enter, we need to commit soon and figure out a way to get the fee to Benkowski. I can be “in” if we enter.
