Trilogy

Finally saw the last part of that French series of films called the Trilogy*. Part One, On the Run, was in December, and I loved it and it was the best of the lot. An Amazing Couple was next, and amazing as they may be, it was an ordinary movie. But it was time to say goodbye to the gang with After Life, and it was pretty good- not the toppermost of the first film, but I liked it.

The conceit of the trilogy was great. I watched the first film and loved it- the next film was interesting, but mainly because of the lite it shed on the first film. Then the last film- stuff i didn't expect happened, but when viewed as part of a greater whole, it made sense.

And good bye to Le Roux, pictured. A James Bond/Bourne Supremacy type guy, except he's not a gvt worker; he's one of those Red Brigade types in 1970's Europe, and he just punishes. Watch the first film

*=wiki calls it "three films with interlocking stories and characters, each of which was filmed in a different genre"

Here is some stuff on the director Lucas Belvaux

km's

Nice review from Rockey on the Simpsons movie. Out near Gf's place they have one of the ten Kwiki Marts/7-11's they 'opened' across the country to pub. the movie. Kinda kool that it's out here and not, say, y know, somewhere else. Driven by several times, and its always packed with people. Saw a line to get in evn, well after it was open.

Soccer Moms

Summer time for me means going to the Dan Ryan Woods (a giant (((well, by city standards))) forest preserve @ 87th and Western) where for years my neices and nephews have played summer soccer. I started to go up when only neice.1 was involved, but eventually there would be five playing twice a week, either m-w or tu-th. I should have been cosching from the start, since I'd already coached in sevral schools by the time niece.1 started, but I only got it to-gether in summer of '04 and '05. In '04 I had niece.2 and nephew.2 one on team, and niece.3 on another. '05 was nephew.2 again on one team and niece.4 on another. It meant coaching from 10 June to 10 Aug mon thru Thursday, from 6pm- 8.30. In all honesty, I felt I was good @ it and I only worked part time in one of those summers, so I felt it was my duty to do it. I loved it, but like all coaching, the amount of time can be a total grind.

Like all else that has ground to an almost halt this summer in my life, i have only made it up to watch games twice this summer. Three are involved now, and one will be too old next year. The other plays volleyball in hs. So I pay most att'n to niece.3, currently playing hs soccer: I figure that whatever positive energy I create going to games is best spent on her, since she's now the only one paying competitively.

And, yes, there's other reasons to go watch A.Y.S.O soccer other than to watch the kids play.

Some bloggers are really good @ it. This from one of the librarian websites i get sent aevery few weeks, here tis a good one. I love how y get the joke @ the beginning, and then it gets better as its spelled out. good'n, and ll i have to say is "..Uhhhh...uhhhhhh..."

The Spider

Saw Spiderman 3, and I say 'no no no' to the critics= I loved it and thought it was the best of the three. No, it wasn't the greatest movie of all time, but I loved the whole black suited part. The black suited part I refer to was a plot line in the movie where a space alien latches onto Spiderman and changes his personality-- well, excentuates the personality wildly, not changes it. These scenes were great.

Emerick

So, got those eight books that i'd ordered before in the mail, and lo and behold it was the beatle recording enginee Geoff Emerick's that I'm into first. I'm 1/3 in, and I'm liking it a lot.

A lot of the stuff I read I read because it's "good for me", not really what I want to read. I guess grad school really taught me to slog through some deeply unappetising books to get a greater appreciation of the whole. My technique is thus shown on my first approach to the American war- i read a 600+ page over-view of it first by james macpherson, then started to get into the individual battles. Ditto the air war in Korea- first the 700+p official USAF history of the war, then got to strategic bombing, the role of the chinease airforce, interdiction, air combat, jets, etc etc etc.... It seems the same progression is taking place with the Beatles. i read that huge bio out in 2005, and two years on it's 'what did the Beatles engineers think??"

So far its a fun read. He breaks into recording the Beatles bit by bit,and it took time before he was a #1 Beatleguy: he'll be all over a session of a single he was at, but then he misses an album and can only relate bits about hearing it being overdubbed or whatever. However, it still early, and its kool when one of the Beatles are kool to him- it's a bit like they're being kool to us.

Some kool insites. I wonder why this one caught my att'n:

" ...I had the distinct impression that (Paul) was the leader of the group. When he spoke, the others listened intently and invairabily nodded thir heads in agreement, and before each take, he was the one urging them onto give it their all. Looking back on it now, its funny how most people thought of John Lennon...as leader of the Beatles. It might have been his band in the beginning, and he might have assumed the leadership role in the press confrences and public apperances, but throughout all the years I would work with them, it always seemed to me that Paul...was the real leader of the group, and nothing got done with out his approval. "

Klas all over the place...klas.1

Saw the smorgasbord of songs and stuff of the 21st of July. There was a bunch of different groups-- well, four would be that bunch-- in the ‘happening’ @ Klas Restuaraunt. It was pretty kool- a bunch of the musical people who were in the same secondary school --L.T.-- @ the same time-- middly- 80’s-- reupping for another concert. This time not in somebodies basement but on main street Cicero.

The last happening @ Klas (insert link) occurred in the beer garden. This time it was a super done concert review, so it was held in one of the many rooms and chambers and passages and outbuildings in the Klas Komplex. The room was perfect.

I came in midst of the first act. They sounded pretty good, though I could judge not their songs fairly- never heard before.

Bully Pulpit spake next. Ah, there was a bit of murkiness about some parts, but its progression. The sound was zippy; Gf pointed out their sound system mita not been 100%, but I sense it’s just them beginnings times. Sing louder. Sing prouder.

They played my favourite B.P. song, yellownadbluemakegreen, which was treat to hear live- but needed work. Gotta sound crisper. A wonderful homes pop song, “oo la la…” was my best song of the set- sounded as good as it did the first time I heard it live. Sing louder. But what I wanted to hear still didn’t come for me: they have that stunningly great lick but they refuse to use it as anything more than a PART of a song. My mind tells me to build the whole track around this one beat, instead of hiding it worthless. Play it LOUD!

The Placard Pups- Err, Poster Children- had a bit of a rockfest- I’ve seen them several times before, but I’d have to say this was rockingest time. They always play loud. My favourite song is the talker between Rose and javabro.

J.A.V.A. himself played in both Bully Pulpit and Pkids. I noticed funny about J.A.V.A.: I’m sure it’s been said, but the his stage demeanor fluctuated with the rocking guitar in Placards Cards and the “I’m no longer a guitar hero” bass play hidden behind in Bull Pen Plummets.

National Trust was the shocker. Per usual , they opened with a 25-30m jam*, but with a jam that I have never heard before. Crank faced out the fucking jace via the jumbomatron keystacks he was partially hidden behind*, there was a drummer ( who is-- ready?-- really good, and I love listening to) and Pfenning on Pfguitar. This song, really loud and funky, arrested us all. It was great, a real treat. I generally know this bannds songs, so this was a real shock.

The second song was also a long song. That is all I remember.

There then occurred a most funny moment. After this ten minute song rite after a 15m song was over, Rocky yelled out-Hey do you have any shorter songs?, which I thought fantastically funny. He got a lot of laughs from all his frenz- I bet if I’d yelled it out, I’d’ve only gotten a Crank smirk.

Shockingly, all we were to get was one last song- but again, since this song was another 15m’er, it made for a 40-45m concert. Also shockingly, it featured Crankguitar- yes, really. I will admidt I’ll follow the sun wherever my artistfrenz lead me, but I sorely miss Crankguitar. I missed it so much I was plotting a massive revival of it myself-- all my wonderful plans and getting people to act and film and walk and all that was also centered about getting cf to cut some guitar skerranging……….I’m saying that I was much surprised to see him guitar it.

*=no I’m not serious

Saurkraut...klas.2

There's only one old 'friend who is a girl'* who I have had a better 'apres nos amour temps' than saurkraut, who was @ the Klas show. One old 'friend' i'm still on talking/telephoning/'hey a bunch of people are going to this place to-nite y should come and hang' sorta terms with (which is real kool-- there are no /zroe/none/zilch mbers left, and really never was-- but we both realised that each other is kool etc........no, Gf has no clue we were one....frenz........but then again, the only other person who knows is knows is veto, and he's not tellin'.

But Saurkraut was there, and it was good to see her. She and I hug out for a protracted amount of time in the early 90's- we were never serious, but helped each other get over those proximo loves. Well, I wanted to be serious, but she was too hung up @ the time-- or just not that into me-- so it went nowhere. But she was always upfront about ou situation and she helped me out in many ways since we parted our 'special' days, so I've always held a soft soft for her. We hung out many times since then, but have since lost touch.

So, Klas nite, and here's my chance to catch up with an old 'girlfriend'......and I say hi and that's it. Really wanted to say hello, but was too stuffed up inside, jazzeled and jaded and incapable of talk. I have a real sour side to me- when i bejax my case, the anti socialness of it all comes out and stupid stuff comes out of me like silence. I'm too lazy to talk, I'm too challenged to talk, i'm to scared to talk- A combo of the three and many more.

Anyway, it was good to see her. She looked great but I would have loved to have heard how great she getting along. Next Klas gogg.

*=she wasn't a girlfriend, but it's the best term to use, so bear with.

Has Anyone Yet Determined What a Reverse Massage Is?

Benkowski’s prior prediction of a revitalized TC Pub trivia night was not looking very good last night. The bar was so empty that Benkowski was floating the idea of having a 2-person maximum per team. None of the regular Bar group was there at first, although Kearney Meats did call to say they were on the way.

While waiting for more arrivals, Benkowski fires this trivia question to J&B- name the first three baseball players to reach 500 homeruns?

J&B pays two separate entry fees, expecting to be split into factions. The second “J&B” entry was going to be named The Mindworms (after it quickly became apparent that using B&J would have been a bad idea). However, as Benkowski continues to solicit teams, he spends a large amount of time talking with Trophy, who had recently arrived. Benkowski comes back to our table and returns one of our entry fees, indicating that negotiations with The Bar have nixed the 2-person team idea.

J&B represented by: Chemical Man, Stix, Lazy Hilts, Saintly Gf and Nixon

Competition: Bar, LNC, Chi, and a second half entry of Jim

TC Pub represented by: Initially Glasses, who was heard calling Oak Lawn native Rob Mackowiak a "fag." When Glasses left, bar duties were taken over by Earth Mother.

First Half: NFL/Entertainment/In the News in July

Saudi Arabia is currently ahead of its record pace for beheadings in one year- what is the record for one year?
Who played the Wicked Witch of the West?
Who is the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys?
Led NFC in quarterback rating in 2006 season?
How much did some German bankers pay to have a private show from the Rolling Stones?

The last question singled out due to the J&B guess of $4 million called “too low” by Benkowski. LNC then guesses $2 million. They had many similar math problems tonight.

The Bar’s Lawyer to Lazy Hilts: “I’m going to piledrive you tonight.”

An early J&B discussion has Juan Uribe shattering the record for grand slams this season. When Uribe later does bat with the bases loaded, J&B decides to put the White Sox season “all in” based upon whether or not he comes through with a granny. Had the game taken place in a telephone booth, the result would bode well for the team. Unfortunately, the game was in Fenway Park. The White Sox have been eliminated from contention.

Scores at the half: Bar 1700 J&B 1200 LNC 600 Chi 280 Jim- not yet playing

Second Half: Chicago Area/Animals/Sports

Led the ’83 White Sox in batting average with .307?
1980s era Cub nicknamed “Zonk”?
England has over 200 captive elephants- what other two countries have over 100 captive elephants?
Three 50+ homer seasons in the 1960s- name the three players?
The two Detroit Tigers currently in the top 6 in batting average for the season (games through Wednesday)?

Saintly Gf wins a “Ladies Only- Most Occupied Piercings” contest against LNC, as her opponent did not have enough of her many piercings occupied.

Scores into final question: Bar 2600 J&B 2040 LNC 1120 Chi 970 Jim 720

Menu of final question categories: States and Cities, Celebrity Birth Years or Groups of Animals.

J&B, Bar and LNC select States and Cities. The other teams select Celebrity Birth Years.

J&B wagers 201 to protect against LNC while assuming it needs the Bar to lose a decent sized wager in order to steal the victory.

Two of three wins the wager. Bonus for all three correct.

States and Cities- name both the largest city and the capital city for Tennessee, Virginia and Alaska (separate cities in each case).

Celebrity Birth- within two, years of birth of Joaquin Phoenix, Demi Moore and Peter Gabriel.

Gentlemen?

Part II

J&B guesses Nashville and Chattanooga (TN), Norfolk and Richmond (VA), and Anchorage and Juneau (AK). J&B isn’t overly confident in its choices.

Benkowski’s “informal question” answers:
Babe Ruth
Jimmie Foxx
Mel Ott

First half answers:
191 beheadings
Margaret Hamilton
Wade Phillips
Drew Brees
$8 million

Second half answers:
Tom Paciorek
Keith Moreland
USA and Germany
Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Willie Mays
Magglio Ordonez and Placido Polanco

Final question:

Jim- 720- Celebrity Birth- guesses Phoenix 1977 (no), Moore 1961 (close enough), and Gabriel 1941 (no)- only one correct- wagered it all- thanks for playing.

Chi- 970- Celebrity Birth- guesses Phoenix 1975 (close enough), Moore 1965 (no), and Gabriel 1954 (no)- only one correct- wagered 920- down to 50 points.

LNC- 1120- States/Cities- guesses Memphis and Nashville (yes), no guess for Virginia (no), and Anchorage and Juneau (yes)- two correct- wagered 500- up to 1620 points.

J&B- 2040- States/Cities- guesses Nashville and Chattanooga (no), Norfolk and Richmond (no), and Anchorage and Juneau (yes)- only one correct- wagered 201- down to 1839 points and needing incorrect guesses from the Bar.

Bar- 2600- States/Cities- guesses Memphis and Nashville (yes), Alexandria and Richmond (no), Anchorage and Juneau (yes)- two correct- wagered 1481- up to 4081 and an end to the J&B 3-game winning streak.

The correct answers:
Tennessee- Memphis (largest) and Nashville (capital)
Virginia- Virginia Beach (largest) and Richmond (capital)
Alaska- Anchorage (largest) and Juneau (capital)
Joaquin Phoenix 1974
Demi Moore 1962
Peter Gabriel 1950

J&B stays to watch the White Sox game to the end (4-2 victory), with the bullpen managing not to implode. I can only wonder if sometime during 2008 we will get a Benkowski trivia question about Ryan Bukvich that starts “this former White Sox reliever…”

Next trivia night is Thursday, August 2nd. I likely am “out.”

Decembrists in July

Both Smokey Treats and Mr. John Gunners have recently sent out ele. smoke signals about getting btter use out of Mil. Park for 'that crowd'. I'm betty glad dat der be proactive frenz getting the crowd out. Gf and I'd been wanting to usas well, so stars aligned with moons and the rockers palyed with the orchastra.

The temporarily unemployed reached the park early and soonered some nice farmland. Gf and I, per usual racing, up to Odessa and then back down again to park west in the Loop. come 6.30p, its many times not that hard to find parking.

Show was.......well, I didn't pay that much attention. not much of a fan of the group, and when they came out for an oncore, I discovered that I actually know one of therir songs. The song got some in the crowd dansing, so it has merit.

Again, the emphesis s just hanging out w/ frenz. There was about 15-20 people spread amongst the assembled blankets: lots I didn't know, several were kids. As fer the crowd as a whole, since I'm sure a watcher, there were much the same trends as in my little band : lots of young people, many pretty, and lots with kids.

Cath(wo-oh) had gotten some eatables, and others had brought drinkables, but no one wanted what i had bought. Then again, it was so fucking crowded- as i'd said before, people had been starting to use the space, and when they'd been to the park before, they'd experienced a totally less filled place. the decembrists brought'm out, huh??

Rained a bit, but it twas a dribble. Nice nite.

Also hung apres show w/ Frida. I was going to a job fair on Friday, and Gf and I stopped by to collect some of her resumes for me to hand out then. She was leaving on a jet plane @ zero oclock the next morn, so we talked for a bit, enjoyed the crazy summer storm's 'lite and pony show' from up in the building. Love the violence of a summer storm.

Chicago Cubs 3, White Sox 1 (16 July)

Sat in the Wrigley Bleachers with Jaxxon & Bonniax. I had a good time. Y know, it's almost worthless to carry on- i'm such a lame writer these days. This is a link to that nite. I also got tix from Peppys this game, which Neice #1 took. she went with her friend, a Cubs fan. This friend is the actual daughter of the writer of the song "South Side Irish", a deeply provincial song that contains a couplet that goes somewhere along the lines of that there are only two teams the singer roots for, the Sox and whoever plays the Cubs. Wierd things everywhere- my neice is a member of my family, but somehow her allegiances are first to the Cubs.

On the PKids site, it goes like this:

Great Performers of Illinois
Yes- it's happening! We're dusting off the cobwebs and playing some shows. interviews streaks

On Sonic Youth Day (last Frid.) I had an interview @ a real nice north side hs. interview went ok, but since they said they'd decide real soon, my guess is that it went to somebody else. Real nice school, and I was gearing up to move to the northside even, but not that big a deal: there's other jobs available, and my confidence is very high.

One option to surely get a job this fall is to work in a grammer school. This is not anywhere near what I want= I've mainly been involved with high schools ('though I have a considerable grammer experience as well). I really am aprehsenive about being in a grammer school- to the lay people in the audience, teaching @ grammer schools and high schools are nite and day, especially in the library. I'd totally be open to working in a grammer school library if it was run more like a hs library- more research and projects, less "reading time" and "Dewey decimal", which is how MOST of the grammer school programs are unfortunately run.

I had an interview @ a school today- a grammer school- and I believe that I may be interested. I have driven back home by this school before and the kids have always seemed happy and orderly. The assistant principal had an extended semi gettoknowyou talk on the phone that impressed me. They are in a new building that is only 10m from my house. And it was made known that this interview was only a peliminary interview. All are signs pointing to maybe a school I'd be comfortable (ANY high school I'd be comfortable with) with being involved with.

The trick is is that I'm a superapostle* of using the media center as an important research tool. I loved that role this year, discovered I'm good @ it, and realise that more and more its a "media center" and less of an emphesis on "library". I relalise that I'm onto something good, and I can only hope it shows in interviews.

Now, the rub to the trick is that so few grammer schools use their library as a media center. however, if this school is to-gether as it seems, and they let me do it, I could (I'm not sure though) relish the role of media man. The administrations gotta be on it, the staff is gotta be on it, and maybe it'd work. Again, i'm not opposed to working in a grammer school- but, to use Crankfaces term that yes I used in the interview : With the research thing , I got mad skillz. The two interviewers were young, so it was kool.

On Monday I already have another interview set up in a Wicker Park grammer school. I wonder what part of Wicker Park is repped @ this school- pelim. indications are that this is also a pretty to-gether school. We'll see.

Job Fair Friday.

Here’s to “Letting it go”

Pitchfork was brilliant. What can I say? The vibe was perfect, the music rocked, crowd was all that; fuck, even parking was easy. I will say--write--this: I loved all weekend, ‘cept for somethings not related to the fest. I loved it and canna wait till next year.

Sonic Youth Day

There was such a lead up to Sonic Youth’s presentation of “Daydream Nation”. Preparation and nostalgia. When first alerted that SY was gonna DN, I knew I wanted to go. The Peter Strasser only has a cassette player (too lazy, not to cheap, to CD the PS), so the cassette copy of DN Joker gave me c. 1990 has been played to shit these last 2m or so.

I spent most of the early part of the day @ Rockies, and in between watching practice videos of the Bulls P. we gorged ourselves on things Sonic and things vegetable. The Bulls- they got some good shit, and I was in such a mood that afternoon that I was able to -- I guess the term that’s gonna be used is ‘let go’ -- I was able to let go and drabble on about this song and that song-- I actually would have them completely drop one songs entire structure for a bit of a loop that I am just certain convinced that if the entire world could just listen to and danse to this little loop, this super little duper loop-- why then, then there would be no more wars, no more poverty, the eagle would fly with the dove…………….ok, I got ideas for it.

The Aerie is a class address. Treetop views indeed. They have that precious commodity: windows facing south - so they will have no problem growing things. I have both a bean and a tomato plant that would do well in their place.

Pasta luncheonette.
Wine and fine folk
Sonic things said
Parma reigned a-mok

We gorged ourselves on Lucia's pasta, and then we gorged ourselves on SY. @ first we listened to a boot of a most fabled SY show, the 14 Oct. 1987 Metro show on the Sister tour. This’ll be covered in the upcoming Sister Test, so not now. We also listened to, for the first time of three this day, DN. We also had extended discussions about the Sonics, DN, and Sister. I must admit to a little shockery when Rockery proclaimed DN the better of the two- and I thought he was one of US!! Later. Two stops: Orf’s and a prof rocky went to grad school with. Then…

Sonic Youth Nite
Collected Gf from the Loop. As stated, parking was kool- 3 blocks away. Lotsa people had taken bikes and the El and buses-their were so many bikes locked up outside the park that it looked like Amsterdam @ rush hour- loved the site of so many bikers. Another lovely site was when we went to collect our tickets. William Randolph is good guys with a honcho in the parks, so TWENTY of us got comped all weekend. When Gf and I presented our licences, they gave us back three shiny new holographic’d tickets for each day. Sometimes it’s really kool to know someone and get some goodies going. Given the fact that William Randolph had set up twenty good guys, there is a whole lotta good karma working in that man rite now. It was an appreciative Set of Twenty.

Gf and I’d missed all up to the opening sounds of “spirit desire”. But when it came time for DN to start, we were in place. We’d been rushed, so there was no time to make grand connexions. I met Rocky, Lucia, Issac, the prof and buddy, and happened to be next to Ian Curtis. We were set.

A lot has been written….well, all by me- about wanting to hear, once and for all, the beginning part of the song “Teenage Riot” that is unofficially known as “spirit desire”. Basically, the abstrat is : “Never’ve heard it: want to”. And lo and behold, there were those familiar guitar sounds and Kim singing.

But.

And I knew, because I’d exhausted Ewetube looking for a perfect example when writing the last SY article, what I’d probably hear: a drastically shortened version of it that really only scarcely touches @ the grandeur of the original “Spiritdesire”. The original is a whole 1.26m piece with lyrics, structure, progression- it’s a song- and the version we got was just a tag piece - it sounded good, but they didn not seriously attempt to play the whole piece. Now, I understand that SY this whole nite played DN not as a note for note reproduction of the original but as a jammed up and slightly improvised template, but I feel that they still have not addressed us with a solid version of Spiritdesire. I’ll take what I can get, but when they said from the stage they’d be hanging out all day Saturday, my mind immediately practicing what I’d say to them:

#1- spirtidesire nextimechicago pleaseforme
#2- sister?

So, here I am sounding like I’m did not enjoy it.
Loved it.
The sound was really rough-- Ian Curtis and I were wishing it wasna so rough. Turns out they had to get a huge new sound system in to correct the problem. But mainly DN sounded through. There were two instances that I registered as my favourite. The bottom of “Total Trash” totally pounded down -Kim played some very heavy --what, bass riffs, bit that wouldn’t be the word- it sounded so low and loud. Alrite, this is no explanation for what I felt, so the second favourite memory is this: Lee thanking the crowd--a heartfelt “Thanks“ and an arm extended--when they ‘ovated’ ready and loud @ the end of “Eric’s Trip”.

They played a three song encore- “Pacific Coast Highway”, “White Cross”, and “Schizophrenia”. Just kidding. The second song was great, but the third song’s spirit was best encapsulated by Ian: “They should have quit while they were ahead.”

Alright.

The Touch of the Artists

Twice was Ulysses refered to me this weekend directly:

1=In the book, the decent Bloom has a shadow character- this guy, like bloom, is a total good guy- a decent man. I can’t remember his name, but @ one point the ‘stream of consciousness’ of this guys mind is taken up. Eventually the shadow character’s ‘stream’ runs across a banana on the street- he thinks it’s a danger to unsuspecting others, so he scoops it up and throws it into the bin.
And yes did I notice a young man doing the same to another banana in a dangerous path. End of this allusion, and the far more important allusion follows==

2=I do believe the same character- I pretty sure, and he’s not a main character-- is amongst some gents who mock Bloom as he passes**. This character takes a look @ the retreating Bloom and disagrees with them along the lines of saying “That Bloom. He has the touch of the Artist about him”- meaning there’s something artistic about him. It’s an important concept in my appreciation of the book: basically, Joyce is taking Bloom, who represents Everyman (you and me and whoever), and saying “Bloom represents ye all. He is an artist. Ye all artists in yr own way”***

And when I watched the two performances I’d come to see this day- Girl Talk and Yoko - I thought “Mad, in each their own way, they recognized the inner artist inside themselves and………….just……let go.” And look @ the shit they have come up with!!
I was very interested in taking in Girl Talk. Girl Talk is the stage name of Gregg Gillis, a d.j. whose sthicht (sic) is best summed by The Readers Jessica Hopper, who wrote that he “… (mixes) good pop music with “bad” pop music for the ironic-appreciation set”.

Since I’m a bit of a d.j. myself, I’ve followed his career so far with a lot of interest. A major deal with d.j’g is the deep confidence in the self. Although I’m no where near Girl Talk, there have been many times during my “career” in which I wanted to drop something dicey and questionable on the dansers. The confidence comes in when you realize that they have been digging yr shit and dancing, and they’re more than likely to follow wherever you take them. A d.j. has to realise that the good shit they hear in a song; if it seems that the people will danse to it, they more than likely will- trust in yr abilities, and the crowd will hear what you hear and respond how you respond). So there have been times where I’ve felt The Fear as a d.j. (“they won‘t danse to THAT- lets put…….this on? Shit, I got 10 seconds….just……ok, this on” ), and it’s been tepid beyond belief. Then there have been times where I get to mix and play anything (“Now I really hear this beat, but if those dansing don‘t, then I can come back next song with this or this…..ah, enough of them will dig it and their body language will bring in even more….kool, play it !!” ), and the crowd trusts the aestic.

It was obv. I had to see him, and it was the first of the nites high points. He was on the small third stage, and it was beyond crowded. It was too crowded; it’s been written that he should have been on one of the main stages. Whatever. I was solo, so it was easy for me to worm my way to a good viewing location. There were people on top of cars, straddling fences, balancing in trees, etc… One punk rock girl took a knife to cut down some banners hung on fences, allowing people trapped behind them to have a great side view of the stage. Great crowd that was really rowdy and bouncy. It was the kinda chaotic situation where I must admit I was waiting for some girls to gone wilde. Never happened, but it was that sorta atmosphere, us all squished to-gether and moving.

The music is all on laptop, and the whole 45m show had him hunched over it pressing buttons. He had a bunch of people on stage dancing around him, and he would sometimes punctuate a musical change by himself jumping out and rocking for 10 seconds until duty behind the laptop called. He came out in a suit, but eventually took off the coat, continually wiped his face with the shirt, and eventually doffed his shirt. It was a great stage presence. The swirling crowd, the presentation, the fucking beats: stunning.

Of particular smug enjoyment from myself was the songs he’d mine for Beats and breaks. I’ve always harbored a love of that early mid 90’s junky disco stuff they play on B-96- stunningly great danse songs, but most shy away because…………….well whyever. Girl Talk mixed in a lot of those glory songs along with other ‘problem songs’ : it was great to hear the crowd respond to this junky stuff.

I will say the last 10m or so were less than the first 35m, but it’s just to quibble. It was a plan to see him, and I got it done. But it was much more than ’done’ : Girl Talk’s great, and I’m glad I took it in and……..learned.

I’d been planning to see a snatch of Yoko, whose set had already started on the main stage. I drifted through the crowd, enjoying what I was hearing: it was Yoko ‘yoking’, but the big old band had a real kool percusion thing going- loud and crisp and moving, and I loved. I stood still, enjoying the song realizing that it would be over soon. Later I learned it was a variant of “Don’t worry”, one of her famous songs. I’d stay another song or so, I thought, then break. But I waited out two more songs: the first ok, then the second really nice. And then Thurston came out tom play. Well, now I’d have to stay……

A thing about Yoko and the crowd. That whole idea of “Letting Go” I’d written about earlier-- it was very apparent in Girl Talk, and it was very important in Yoko’s career as well. One has to dig yr own aestic if one of yr performance pieces is people scissoring off yr clothes and yr vocal styling is a mess of yelling and screaming. Yet, she obv. had so much confidence in herself: she has always been a prime example of Letting Go. But would this crowd respond ? When I originally walking in, there was a % of people who obv. were not feeling it**** and bit by bit opting out. Yoko’s stage patter was very eccentric. Scattered young girls voices behind me basically intoning “What the fuck is this????” But basically the crowd dug it: those same girl voices also kept talking in approving tones “Yoko’s soo cute!” when she’d say something out there. Basically, the amount of chaff walking out couldn’t match the amount wheat moving up for better views. The crowd densed up and concentrated on enjoying the show.

We, as a crowd, wanted to Let Go with Yoko: in the end, we, to-gether, touched each other with our artistry. Ensemble. Some notes on the show read ‘the crowd was great--many had “let go”, & accept life in part as art- & the atmosphere premeated it all.’

Justly, I’ll leave it @ that, and get back to Thurston and the Best part of Yoko’s show.

Thurston produced those sonic stylings - seascape sounds***** - he’s known for and Yoko squelched back in a song she and John had done called “Mulberry”. I really dug that Thurston sound and the nice interplay. Then the band rocked out another groove, and in 15s yoko had the crowd swingswaying arms and singing along “War is over if you want it/ War is over if you want it/ War is over if you want it/ War is over? Nowwwwwww.” You had this fantastic percussion beat, Thurston @ sea, Yoko, and the entire crowd singing along. Yeaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Until the day I die, I do dearsay. And then, to end it all, remember that song I walked in on after I left Girl Talk and only got to hear part of ???? Surprise Reprise !!!! Got to end this Saturday nite by enjoying the “Don’t worry” beat again, this time with Thurston adding on.

This is the reason we go to concerts. Well, maybe just the main one.

Peek Neek!

The last day @ Pitchfork was less spent to music and more to family. Quite early Gf and I ran into Snowden, and he pointed out the crowd of frenz sitting just there all nice on blankets and such. We went there after our bathroom wait was over and based ourselves w/ our frenz till the end. The Gunners and the Jokers were there in total (both had their little blond additions in tow). The superhero of the wkd, William Randolph was in the circle, as was Smokey Treats, Vampire, Guitars, and who am I missing?

First the music: as per above, I had half an ear towards the music, so here’s my clipped reviews:

Malmukus: Solo guitar, ok, the Jiks show I saw 2-3ya was much better
Of Montreal: Amusing, some kool synth beats
New Pornographers: several kool songs
Klaxons: on the little stage-they were loud and boisterous punk types
De La Soul: Seen them in 1990, and they were much better now. Played a bit of “Hey Love”, and when Gf and I were ready to leave, they kept us there by playing one of their absolute best beats- song title ????

But mainly it was a day to relax on the blanket and take part in a music fest w/ my frenz. The thing aout it is that this crowd of frenz has a love of going to see new music. For years they have been going to SXSW in Austin, and I’ve never went. So it was a pleasure to finally enjoy a pure music fest--like I was one of them--for the first time with them. I was cognizant of that fact.

I also liked that there were two kids there. Pitchfork was a family friendly place; as frenz get older and more kids come, I’m glad that the wives and kids were also able to take part in the wkd. Although Jesus pointed out that when man gets married he truns his back on all else, it’s gratifying to watch the relevance and importance of friendships continue. I’m a big believer in “It takes a village”, even if the village never takes any part in rearing the kids. To me, simply an available social outlet for parents outside the stunning pressure cooker of a young family is a very important thing. They need it.

In addition to That Crowd sharing the blanket space, Ms. W. Burg and her buddy Chance Fry were spotted by Gf and I. They’d been there the whole wkd- Chance was a high faltuing dude who mixed with the stars in Manhatten (why yes, he did tell me a story of when he worked with Yoko-she’s kool says he) and’d flown in for the wkd. He was leaving with a bunch of L.P.’s. I’d met him briefly in 2000 in NYC, and we had a good time trading stories of a certain nature.

Berg had a great insite: She’d last seen one person on the blanket many many years ago when he was deeply troubled- especially that last nite she‘d seen him, he was just a total stunning mess. She, with great satisfaction, noted how he’d made it through and not with the damage others in his situation had suffered. She was surprised to find him not just alive but thriving. Very interesting insite.

It was also a day for Gf and I to explore. Usually I’m deep cheap - barato in Spanish. I eat before I go to concerts or ballgames and refuse to pay their stilted prices. However, since the whole wkd was free, and the fact that Pitchfork made a point of keeping the prices down, I ate a double rib sandwich from Robinsons and had a beer. Ok, Gf bought them both. But later, I did pay meself for a blackbean sandwich from some esoteric kinda place. See, I can spend money…….sometimes……..

We wandered about the whole park. Gf enjoyed the whole experience. She was excited to be part of the crowd, to listen to the music, and to hang out w/ frenz. She likes everyone a lot, and obv. peeps like her, so she had a rush of a time (except for some time on Friday when we…….well, whatever….). I’m glad.

I also got my confidence up and went garbage picking- Berger and I wandered the post-show Of Montreal grounds looking for the magic 12 empty water bottles so we could get a free CD sampler. She’d gotten a lot by hanging around the merch. tent, but I was too scared to copy her model later. One C.D. in three days will have to be enough.

So, I loved it. Yoko and girl talk were the main musical highlights, with love to SY and Daisy Agers. But just the whole vibe of the wkd was special. Not just Gf and my frenz, or grand thoughts on art and artistry becoming apparent, but all of that ensemble. A great ensemble.

So, an interview @ a kick ass school this friday morn- I'd be living on the north side

But- two more: one way south, and it was the first school I ever was paid nicely to teach @.

The other school : another ns school (the first time I ever stood before a class of 15yo's and taught- my student days

I feel like I'm the Babe Ruth of librarians and this is my free agent year.

Confidence is High.

I repeat:

Confidence is High.

What a fucking ego i got- love to see myself.

Linked it already below, but in case you've read the Daydream piece and missed my add on @ the end. Concentrate on The Sisters- they are all six there.

Ah, and here's a soundtraxx to a film featuring.........well, blakie, but also the Sisters.

does FUCK YOU sound simple enough?

Ok, so the angle is that I write up the “Sister” experience some other time. This post, obstinately about the Sonic Youth’s ’88 LP “Daydream Nation”, is deeply overshadowed by that earlier LP. Simply put, in one of the hipster circles I ran with in those days (well, it’s still the same circle, despite massive losses and stunning gains and total realignment of focus- jobs, footballers wives, and double kids here and another coming* . That core of six muthafucka‘s, though not crashing in each others dorm rooms and sleeping with each others lovers anymore, still hang. The “Sister” group, I‘ll coin it now- wait, I like “The Sisters” better--yes!!!--that‘s how powerful a shadow that LP casts.), “Daydream Nation” was probably one of the most eagerly waited for LP’s of all time. “Daydream Nation”, a great LP no doubt, just wasn’t “Sister”. Again, “Daydream Nation” is great- put the earlier LP was such a perfect LP that we expected not just the same but EVEN MORE : and we didn’t get it. Impossibly tite rock beyond belief gave way to fat long compositions that meandered and seemed often never to get to the point. “Sister” seemed to be point after point after point, and every point got higher and higher. But I’ll save that when I write up “Sister Nite”, that brave April ’88 nite on the lake which I think still resonates to this day--well, in me, @ least**.

All that negative energy about “Daydream Nation” the day before I’m to experience it in it’s entirety? And it’s shit?? No way. “Daydream Nation” , in its own ways, also lives with me, and is important in social groups that aren’t based on “The Sisters” group.

And, believe it or not, my absolute favourite LP moment of any Sonic Youth thing is on this LP= the “spirit desire” intro, all 1.26m of it, that opens the LP and the song “Teenage Riot”. I’m ritely obsessed with this tidbit, and except for the chance of hanging around with-what, 40 people I know that are going- the chance to listen to/experience/ love that 1.26m of the LP. When I saw them on the initial leg of the “Daydream Nation” tour back in November ‘88, I really don’t remember hearing it. They’ve played “Teenage Riot” maybe 2-3 other times I’ve seen them, but never the “Spirit desire” part. To-morrow. (This is the best ewetube version of spiritdesire i could find-it's ok, but the 1.26m is totally shortchanged- i hope they play it all to-morrow.) Maybe i will have someone ink in "spirit" on one eyelid and "desire" on another, or get out my old lowtop Chucks- one with spirit on the toe, the other with........you guessed it.

But the Lp is more than just that. I like Lee’s “Erics Trip”, the non-freakout parts that sandwich the extended jam section of “Total Trash”, “The Sprawl” “Kissability”, “Hey Joni”, “Rain King”, and seleted parts of “Trilogy“. Wait, isn’t that most of the LP? And it is- but like a sports team loaded with great players that can’t win, something is missing***. “Sister” is missing. I’m assuming all of The Sisters agree with me (look there- a comment button- below!! ), but there are good frenz- whose musical tastes I’ve paid serious attention to and I will be standing next to - who really dig “Daydream Nation” more than “Sister”. Hmmmmmm.

But there are two indelible memories associated w/ “Daydream Nation” that rank with “Sister”. The second one was that initial “Daydream Nation” tour in Nov. ‘88 @ the Metro. So hepped were we, some of us (not me!!) realLy Silly faceD, for that show. And I remember nothing. Nothing @ all. Except for the encore. Opening for the sonics that nite was two bands- and one of the bands, whose name excapes me, had a lead singer who basically just screamed through songs. The opening encore song was “I Wanna be yr Dog” that the Sonics had covered on an earlier LP, and they had the screaming guy take lead screaming. GOD DID THIS BRING IT ALL DOWN. Rarely have I experienced such rampant joy in shoving and pushing and jumping and sweating and THEN the lead screamer stepped on my hand (first row- remember how important that was and how we‘d be so determined to secure that spot-center and front) and stage dived. Wonderful pandemonium that leads me to poetry:

“missing somethings/
the vinyl sides/
apparent all over/
in that wilde live ride.”

And , saving the best for last, or is it the first for last: 1.26m. Stated above , my favourite piece of music from the group is the first 1.26m of “Daydream Nation” : an extended introduction to the opening song “Teenage Riot” (the best song on “Daydream Nation”) where a simple strumming guitar and Kim’s sexy singing still has me obsessed (so easy to click ’play’ on the CD and listen to it over and over and over--bad me!!). But how deeply special that 1.26m is I will reveal here (I’ve said it before, but I know no one remembers it). There was an LU dorm room chock full of my frenz: the famous 5C. It was in a dorm five flites above Lake Michigan-and my memory is of opening the lake windows wide open on a Saturday morning, feeling the cold air rushing around our bodies and the room. We were obsessed with “Daydream Nation” then, and continually played it. For years after, the first 1.26m of “Daydream Nation” - Kim singing, that little lite guitar- always - ALWAYS- brought me back to that room and that time and that cold wind, riffling past us. I had so much desire for that spirit.

So, “Daydream Nation” is here and I am to see it all to-morrow. It’s good LP, there’s many songs (and people--GF‘s going, GF‘s going, GF‘s going!!!) I can’t wait to see. But man, wouldn’t it be kool to once again to hear the bum bum BUMP bum bum bum BUMP of “Sister” holding the day? Listen, we gotta talk to Thurston and Kim and Lee and Michael Myers the drummer. They listen to us. They must know that “Sister’ is the key==wait, I do know they know that--every time I’ve seen them, they always play most of the LP they are promoting- but that now 20y old LP “Sister” ? They always play 2-3 songs from it-They know how good that record is. We know how good that record is. Maybe we’ll get an encore of “White Kross” or “Kotton Krown”. But I guess, for now ‘ “Rain King” on “Silver Rockets” will have to do” ’ .

....................................................................................

Abstract: Although "Daydream Nation" is a good LP, it is nowhere near the piece of perfection that "Sister" is. I'm speaking for the Sisters, but we believe that "Sister" should have the super acknowledgement as one of the very best LP's in this universes concept of art.

Blaxx has absolutely no interest in writing about anything that happens beyond, say, the last week (I‘ve been a Blackolyte for, what, four years now, so I know the topics he writes on) ; but Roxx- if you ever are gonna write about this nite, drop me a line so I can get mine in around the same time. I’m asking.

***=When the Rolling Stones released “Brown Sugar” in early 1970, Phillip Norman, in his great stones book Sympathy for the Devil, wrote that, as great a song as it was, something was missing: “The Sixties were missing” (p 351). And what the fuck’s wit Da Sox there days?? The Sixties are missing? No excuse!

This a new film that's just out- and lo and behold, all The Sister's are repped. Nicely done. Shit, and i thought I was the romantic nostalgic one. Wait, i am.
And an even newer film. I still am.

Yes, that is the war bio of Winters I have't read yet (I bet it will take.............6h to read it- Winters one of my heros--and a killer , to boot!!). Yes, that is Ericksons history of the eastern front, the famous one that supplanted Clark's Barbarossa rite when this writer was a teenager in university. Funny, those early 80's books have now been supplanted by a new generation of writers who have access to previously closed Soviet records. Still wish to read erickson- I already have his Road to Berlin. And, finally, my fetishs for Jutland, Wake, and RAF bombing. will send it out to-nite.

*=I hate to say this, but French is still so fucking natural for me to use despite my deep immrsion- well, shallow immersion- into Spanish. One day I'll be able to whip out the Spanish as easy as the french. And damn is my tourist french fuckinh tite!!

So whats the deal betwixt women and roses? I know, not all women, but whatever advertising/growing up a women in America/ etc has wrought, lots of the lades like roses. Now, give roses to a guy............well, this guy would try to plant them in the ground (My Dad grew roses along w/ the veggies, and in my first classroon ever I had roses).

First time ever bought for Q on our first anniversary. Two more bunches for her, I think once for Madonna (not twice), and once for Afrika Korps. They really like it. Plus, I like it 'cause they are so cheap. All the other ones were bought @ the Flower Bucket (suggested: Khan) and they really kept prices down ($12/dozen). Now, however, I Dominicks them like to-nite= with the card and a $2 coupon, they were $8.99/pretax. Cheap, and she likes them. I have a hard time spending money on plants that will die so soon, but it makes her happy, so it's an easy thing.

Was a little shy about stealing peoples work (and opening people's mail....vait, vas ist dees? Dead Kennedy's??), but I got enough ok's from the peeps that fer sure I will. I stole some black and stole some roxx and will steal more when I can.

This is the best of the wBerggirl's latest batch. Must get a camera. I dunno what's going on in the foto. My guess is that it was some sorta art project, like the wrapping of the Louvre (or whatever it was) in similar fabric.

Great shot. And I've been given the go-ahead to steal more.

Bizzare, but she's such a favourite

Not exactly sure how this happened.

Don't forget the show

The coming short sharp sweet battle in the north.

Friday, 1000h, way north in the city, my first interview this summer. It's @ one of the best schools in the city, and they way I carry on about how great a librarian I am in these pages hopefully shines through--minus the arragonance. I can onlt assume that I am the best candidate for the job (oops-cut that arrogance in the interview). The librarian will be one of the people to interview me-and I know he knows people that I do(and they love me). This is a job I really want, though it's not the school I was @ last year (boo!). It's one of the , say, 6-7 schools across the entire city I'd love to work @.

What this means is............I'll have to move to the north side. so, i'll keep my place in Mt. Greenwood, but get a wee apt for myself. And yes, 'delegation' will end- yes to say yes to 2-3 parties a year @ my crib.

yr not reading/yr not reading/yr not reading in the rite place/if you want to/ read my good shit/click that link down below

If yu wish to read what I was working on until, say, 0300h, clix on this linx......if you dig whatever this blog happens to be called rite now (ok, its security out and nothing more), you will dig my long ass article on................and please forgive for the pictures of the women: every 2-3m I feel disgusted with myself for posting pictures of sexy women, but still I do it......I wonder if there is some Christian Summer camp that can have Jesus burn my love of beautiful woman out of my soul.........ah, whatever- like Jesus wasn't checking out shiska booty @ that wedding @ Cana.

09 July, 2007

somedays

I am prolific. One on dcs, finished editing Lazers, and four others of the style. women, forgive me for being so sexist- its something I'd like to work on. But not now.

Pirates III

GF and I saw Pirates III ovr da wkd. We were not amused.

However, any movie with Kiera Knightly is a good movie. In trying to appear only deeply sexist instead of How dear he post pictures of beautiful woman what does he think he is a fuckin' man? sexist I didn't post any of the goodies found w/in the above link. Instead, I ran across this amusing picture. Others, take the red AND blue pill and follow the rabbit-lynx.

Second Touch / Rome

Big Frank told me to watch HBO's Rome*, and I have been rewarded. I'm through the first eight episodes, and like it tremendously. Per usual, i got a book out on Rome, and it's in my mind now.

I'll write more about it later (the battle scences, etc...) but I wanted to touch on.............. Shit, i dunno how to put it words........Say, like after you watch a soccer game, a lot of time you gather yr frenz and go out and play soccer. Or, see a good documentary on architecture, so you grab a friend and go downtown to see Sullivan or Mies. Or when you hear a song and decide you have to see that band so you grab a friend to go. Or read an interesting recipe, so get to-gether to cook up a meal. Or...............

So, in Rome, there are markets, history, battles, palace intrigue, marches, friendships, customs, religion, army commands, etc...........and a lot of sex. And generally speaking, a certain back then it seems it was a lot of nonmissionary position that the Romans practiced - oh, just write doggy style, won't you?

*=By the way, nary of this touches on Cleopatra, though that's her in the photo from Rome above.

First article touching on sex / Sexy Librarians

I have such good frenz. Shipley, Gallo, and Big Frank (plus 'Cranksy', ive just discovered)all sent me a NYT article on Librarians that appeared in 8 July NYT. First of all, it always hurts me to miss articles in the NYT. I literally read 93% of the main section from m-f because I just love the international news. This got to be such a consuming task (in terms of time) that I only get it m-f So I really miss the sat and sunday versions of the paper- i hate to do it, but i need some time to read other things....

So, I can't link this article to this blog- NYT, unlike, say, the Guardian, makes users punch in their code words. I'm thinking of creating an email account tied directly to Security Out (the codes'd be rite there on the page)for the NYT, but we'll see. But for now, check it out yrself.

The article is geneally about how librarians are not the staid old lady types of image yore== especially because of the stunning importance of technology in the library these days, lots of hipster types are now involved*.

So, this brings me to an old lover of a librarian. I had classes with this girl who was my type totally- very sexy girl. It became known that we were interested in each other, and the secong time we went out we both knew @ a cetain point that "It was on." Now, this girl wore glasses 20% of the time, but I really developed a .....what's the word....fetish about her in thise glasses. As we were sitting @ Keegans, several drinks in us but no lines crossed yet, I told her I loved the glasses.....because......uh.........whyever I liked them I did. We were touching on our pasts, and she came out with this (italiscised parts indicate when she swept off her glasses): ""Oh, usually i'm the reserved librarian type, but sometimes I just take off my glasses...." Incredible image, and incredible @ that moment, because I knew what she was saying.

*=Wait, does this mean I can no longer carry the 'punk rock chip' on my sholuder anymore? I can't claim "I'm so kool because I'm Mr. Punk Rocker and look @ the uncool job I do? PUNK ROCK I'M KOOL !!!!!!! SO KOOLER THAN YOU !!!!!!!!!!" Damn. Thanks a lot, Shipley, Gallo, and Frank. Jerks. I was once kool and unique.........God i wish I had better frenz............. And that goes for fuck'n Cranksy as well.

Lefty Alleluia

Lefty Alleluia......this was written by me with a pofound sense of..... "Phewwwwwwww!!!! That was too close!! "

Oh God I'm pregnant

Heard 10k Maniacs “Hey/Give’m what they want”, an early 90’s radio hit. Catchy, up beat pop. Always kinda liked it, but really loved http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ypkQhbaFcU. It was 10k & Natalie with special vocal help from Michael stipe. I’m @ home writing, but understand that Ewetube will give me this in an instant. I remember that as a fun nite: one of my co-werkers @ Pier One, where I worked a bit in the early 90’s, had an inauguration party w/ lots over.

As I drove listening, I wanted to send some love to that tv program that usually has kick-ass presentations of music: SNL. This is not to say “hey SNL is still funny/hip/did you see it this wkd?”. This is to say : “Over the time I have been watching the show, usually when they have a musical guest on, the presentation of the song usually totally rocks- if it is a good song”. The examples are legion:

Third Eye Blind. “How’s it gonna be?”. Very sappy breakup song, even embarrassingly so, but I like. I’d seen them before they hit w/ that “Do do do/do do do do” song *. They opened up for Blur @ Metro (I think it was Blur) and they had a shitty first half set- people booing, mocking them, they giving the finger back. However, they totally won the crowd over in the second half- never seen such bad vitriol against a band totally turned to cheers in the course of one set. Big Franks old lover Lee loved this song as well- in hindsite, it was near the time they parted ways, and I always wondered how much the liking of that song centered around the issues in their relationship- well, the severing of ties part, I mean.

Nirvana. Rite after he offed hissel’, SNL repeated their appearance from the earlier fall on the show. I remember I was watching w/ Blackie one Sat. nite @ 1826 w. Lunt when they said Nirvana was being shown special. I ran out to get a VCR tape to tape it, w/ blackies “Kool”.

Dee-lites “World Clique” sometime in ‘91. She sang brilliant, and the masses of sounds- not quite Spectorish, or even in that vein- but all the little bits of percussion sounding though- lovely version. The percussion breaks !!!!!

Morrissey “Suedehead”. Not the best version ever, but he did it 4ys after , and w/ a new LP out, it was originally released. Nice to see him on SNL. Again a 1826 taped joint, this time w/ Big Frank there.

Snoop was on once. They played the greatest version of …..what’s the songs name? The brilliant part of that song was the growling of the backup rappers line “Wit’ my mind on my money and my money in my mind. I wanted to VCR it when they repeated it later in the season, but they didn’t show that song again.

Spice Girls. Wannabe. 1998 (?).Sounded good (really!!), they looked good: the best vesion of this song.

U2. I’ve liked the group for ever now- saw them on the War tour @ Aragon in ‘83- great show. For me, they still put out 2-3 songs an LP that I fancy. Now, “Elevation” is a deeply simplistic song- I sometimes feel that the jokey little stanzas I litter about this web address are better rhymes than the lyrics of that song. But this version is outstanding. Bono’s a showman enough, and if you grant that a showman has a bit of the absurd in them--check out Mick or James Brown--than one can enjoy the show. In reality, the song rocked, and the best way to enjoy it is to watch U2 do “Elevation“ is to pay att‘n to “The Woman in the Red Dress” dancing to the song in the audience. One of my pet sayings, arrogant, personal, and absurd all in one, is this:

“The two best things in life are the go ahead run in the bottom of the eight inning @ Comisky Park and a girl that dances.”

And in this SNL version, you can see her rocking out a couple times, just for a second or two, obv. Enjoying the song. Kudo’s to U2 for making a beautiful woman danse.

Garbage “When I grow up”. They are good live (yes, Shirley’s sexy ), and this version made me love that line “oh God I’m pregnant”, which I used a lot maybe 7-8 y.a. I remember one of my favourite students of all time liking garbage and smashing pumpkins a lot, and I remember starting to like this song plenty in the last week before summer 2000: they'd be 2-3 kids showing up for class the last few days of school, so we would combine classes and show movies and such. I aired the Matrix and plenty of videos like this one.

These are the ones readily @ mind- say what you will about SNL etc…, the $$ they get to spend on sound systems generally pays off. I tried to ewe them all for you, but it wouldn't let me- something about ewe tube not having the others........

*=when that song was out and big, either Dave Navarro or Dave Ghrol were asked the “If you could write one song……” question and he replied w/ “Do do do/do do do do” . Pretty sure Grhol.

Why “Save the Chief” Doesn’t Come to Trivia Night Anymore

Written by D.L.
Names edited by Hilts

It was a desolate version of TC Pub contrasted with a loud version of J&B last night. After the game, Stix asked Benkowski if there might be a better location for J&B to play. Mulling it over for a moment, Benkowski decides that he thinks TC Pub will revitalize. That was probably his way of saying he didn’t want J&B to destroy the game at any of his other locations.

J&B represented by: Chemical Man, Stix, Hilts, Dragon, Gf, Lazers, and Hilts’s friend Jamie Tree.

Competition: The Bar and Hammers.

TC Pub represented by: no waitress at all, but Newbie was in the house.

First Half: Music “M”/2007 White Sox/News from Tuesday

Highest single-season save total for Mike MacDougal?
Spice Girls reunion- how much will each Spice Girl earn?
Other than White Sox, the two MLB teams for which Luis Terrero has played?
Other than White Sox, the two MLB teams for which Toby Hall has played?

For a “Ladies Only- Drink Faster” contest, Hammers ask Newbie to drink for them. She declines. Hammers then request that Newbie be thrown out of the bar. The bartender agrees to drink for Hammers and wins the challenge against the Bar. Benkowski: “The greatest moment in Hammers’ history.”

For a “Ladies Only- Biggest Tattoo or Most Piercings” contest, the bartender apparently was having trouble understanding what was required of her. Benkowski: “Show a tattoo bigger than your opponent.” One of the Bar responded: “Not the whole person.”

Perhaps there was an early blow towards killing off the obsolete “Ladies Only” challenges, as one passed without any team taking part, even though all three teams had a lady at that point (assuming bartender still would play for Hammers).

A “Long Distance Throw” pits J&B against Benkowski. After his throw, apparently perceived to be bad, hilts yells, “F*cker!” Benkowski: “Must have been a rough day in the salt mines.”

Scores at the half: J&B 1500 Hammers 970 Bar 860

Second Half: TV/2007 Cubs/Chicago Locations

First year in majors for Michael Wuertz?
Highest single-season homer total for Felix Pie in the minors?
Played Kitty on “Gunsmoke”?

That last question led to controversy, as Benkowski gave the answer prior to giving the Bar a chance to guess. The resolution of this situation was that Benkowski let the Bar guess who played Matt Dillon on the same show. They definitely traded up to an easier question there.

At 3000 W 143rd- what city? (good pounce on Hangman by Stix for this one)

A “Drink Faster” contest pits J&B against Hammers. The contest was Jamies’s initiation into J&B (although I think he has played before). The Hammers finish the drink faster, but the spillage is noticeable- puddle on the floor and a drenched shirt. Benkowski mulls over the situation. A TC Pub employee brings out a mop to clean the puddle- Hilts: “Wipe up that shame!” The points are given to Hammers, as Benkowski says something about teams being handicapped by their mouth. Not sure if that was a shot at Hilts or a shot at the messy Hammer guy. Despite the comment, I think the score played the biggest role in the ruling.

Scores into Final: J&B 3110 Hammers 1740 Bar 1580

Despite that status, J&B was sloppy tonight. Rookie Jamie once yelled an answer when it wasn’t our turn, and one “throw the ball” trick should have been bounced rather than straight into the box. I can’t even imagine what the score would have been otherwise. I guess that’s why Benkowski doesn’t want us raiding other games.

Choice of Final Category: Celebrity Birth Years, Chicago Area Businesses, or 1985-1999 Individual Sports. J&B selects Celebrity Birth, Bar selects Businesses, and Hammers select Sports.

J&B wagers the classic (371).

2 of 3 wins wager. All 3 will win a bonus of 3000.

Celebrity Birth: within two, the years of birth of Drew Carey, Katie Couric, and Carmen Electra.

Chicago Businesses: within two, the years the following businesses opened- Aurelio’s Pizza, Rainbo Cone, and Frosted Mug Drive-In (under that name, not as Dogs & Suds).

Sports:
Over the time span, only bowler to win PBA championship twice?
Last heavyweight fight of the 1900s- November 13, 1999- Lennox Lewis defeats whom?
Two-time US Open winners of the 1990s included Payne Stewart, Lee Janzen, and whom?

Off to my first Sox game of the year, so part II will come later. In the meantime….gentlemen?

PART II TO FOLLOW

And as I contemplate whether or not today's 20-14 loss to the Twins was worse than the ballpark opening 16-0 drubbing by the Tigers in 1991, here's the rest....

Part II

After much debate, J&B guesses 1960, 1958 and 1973.

First half answers:
27 saves
$20 million per Spice Girl
Baltimore and Arizona
Tampa Bay and Los Angeles

Second half answers:
2004
15 homers
Amanda Blake
James Arness
Posen

Final answers:

Bar- 1580- Chicago Businesses- guesses 1967 for Aurelio’s (No- 1959), 1957 for Rainbo (No- 1926), and 1977 for Frosted Mug (Yes- 1978)- only 1 correct- wagered it all- thanks for playing.

Hammers- 1740- Sports- guess Dick Weber (No- Pete Weber), Buster Douglas (No- Evander Holyfield), and Fred Couples (No- Ernie Els)- none correct- wagered it all- thanks for playing.

No drama for this one.

J&B- 3110- Celebrity Birth- guesses 1960 for Carey (Yes- 1958), 1958 for Couric (Yes- 1957), and 1973 for Electra (Yes- exact)- all three correct wins wager and bonus for a winning total of 6481. I guess that’s why Benkowski doesn’t want us at other bars.

As for Save the Chief: As you may or may not recall, the Chief had added a cute Asian girl to their team earlier this year. For a “Ladies Only- Roll the Ball” challenge, this Asian girl played for the Chief. Instead of rolling the ball, she threw it directly into the box. Benkowski disqualified her, arguing that he clearly said to “roll” the ball. The main Chief guy told Benkowski the Asian girl didn’t speak English. I may need Stix’s memory to fill in Benkowski’s response, but I think he made some sort of crack about that (was it something about needing to know English to play?). Save the Chief was furious and hasn’t played at any location ever since.

Moral of the story: Asian girls are attractive, but they are even more attractive when they don’t speak English.

Next trivia night: Thursday, July 19th.
