J & B by DL

Minor League Trivia

Benkowski must have grabbed the wrong pile of trivia questions for last night. I think the batch he brought was originally earmarked for the AAA league. If things fell the right way for a team like J&B or the Bar (and if the game didn’t experiment with a new rule…more on that later), the all-time record for points could have been shattered with that board.

J&B, winners of three TC Pub nights in a row and fresh off a second place finish at St Bede’s, represented by: Chemical Man, Stix, Hilts, Gf and Lazers.

The Competition: Bar, Kevin’s Back, Goose, Fantasticos, and Whalers (a traveling team from another location).

TC Pub represented by: Glasses in disguise (without glasses).

TC Pub also represented by a trainee waitress named Mo, quickly nicknamed Tasty. Art later suggested that the nickname should be spelled “Tastee with 2 e’s, like a stripper.” Art later suggested the nickname Perky. All I know is that she looked very young. Glasses had the sense to warn her about J&B.

First Half: Sports Mix/2007 Oscars/TV 2002

Tonight’s trivia will experiment with a new rule: the maximum amount of consecutive correct answers for any team is 4- they will lose control of the board afterwards. I think the official wording of the new rule states “when J&B gets 4 correct answers in a row, they will lose control of the board.”

2002- #2 rated show for the season- is not a sitcom?
2002- #1 rated show for the season- is a sitcom?
Bear linebacker scored a touchdown against Green Bay in 1999?

This one is for Jim: Steve Larmer’s streak at its peak?

Tidbit for posterity: the first team affected by the new “4 in a row” rule at TC Pub was Kevin’s Back.

Scores at the half: Bar 1020 Kevin’s Back 800 J&B 800 Goose 460 Whalers 420 Fantasticos will start the second half.

Second Half: 90s Movies/Sports/Mixed Up

Only Blackhawk with 3 career playoff hat tricks?
First 2nd baseman to reach 10 Gold Gloves?
In “The Shootist” who shot the guy who shot John Wayne?

Great strategic use of the “4 in a row” rule by Stix in the fourth quarter- J&B had answered three consecutive questions. Knowing that we’ll lose our turn if we answer a question correctly anyway, Stix suggests targeting what was expected to be a “free but lose your turn” card on the board, with the intent of guaranteeing the points. Worked like a charm!

Scores going into Final: J&B 1650 Kevin’s Back 1530 Bar 1480 Whalers 1440
Goose 1040 Fantasticos 520

Prior to announcing the Final Category, the Bar suggests it will be whatever J&B wants it to be anyway. Benkowski then announces the Final Category as “Landmarks in Jeremy’s (Trophy’s) Trailer Park.”

Real Final Category: Recent Sports Illustrated

2 of 3 will win wager. All 3 will win 3000 bonus points.

J&B bets the classic (although betting zero was also discussed briefly).

Pro athlete who sprained an ankle blocking a Bobby Flay shot in the celebrity game during the NBA All-Star game weekend?
MLB player who injured his wrist horsing around with his kids on his yacht?
In a poll of NBA players, which player was voted the slowest in the NBA?

Gentlemen?

Part II

Coincidentally, Stix had been at the eye doctor earlier in the day and had a chance to browse through the most recent Sports Illustrated. As a result, Stix was confident the answers were: Reggie Bush, Ken Griffey Jr and Yao Ming.

J&B lets Glasses take their answers to Benkowski. She starts to open the index card with our answers while saying “hey, everybody.”

First Half:

CSI
Friends
Barry Minter
884

Second Half:

Denis Savard
Roberto Alomar
Ronny Howard
(Note: Chemical Man initially thought it was Ron Howard. Another team selected Hangman, and we were a bit thrown by the 5 letters listed for the first name. I think Chemical Man was a little miffed that we decided the “throw the ball” instead of trying to work the Hangman.)

Final Category:

Fantasticos- 520- guess Reggie Bush (yes), Ken Griffey Jr (yes), Shaq (no)- wagered 519- up to 1039. That’s still the lowest score.

Goose- 1040- guesses Reggie Bush (yes), Roger Clemens (no), Yao Ming (yes)- wagered 1040- up to 2080.

Not a lot of drama left for J&B, eh?

Whalers- 1440- guess Reggie Bush (yes), Ken Griffey Jr (yes), Yao Ming (yes)- wagered 1437- with bonus up to 5877 and loads of confidence.

Bar- 1480- guesses Reggie Bush (yes), Jim Edmonds (no), Shaq (no)- wagered 1475- down to 5. hilts grabs a garbage bin in search of the Bar.

Kevin’s Back- 1530- guesses Reggie Bush (yes), “the loud dude on J&B” (no), Yao Ming (yes)- wagered only 1- up to 1531. I’m not certain which J&B member they are referencing.

J&B- 1650- guesses Reggie Bush (yes), Ken Griffey Jr (yes), Yao Ming (yes)- wagered 1411- with bonus up to 6061 and its 4th TC Pub victory in a row.

Benkowski: “J&B wins it…without using the telephone.”

Trivia Note: There will not be trivia at TC Pub on March 15th, due to the start of some college basketball tournament (is this new? I’m not familiar with it). Our next trivia night at TC Pub will be Thursday, March 29th. J&B is contemplating a road trip to a different location prior to then.

Seems to me the evening ended with some verses of “Spiderporn” (sung to the tune of the 1960s Spiderman theme).

From Benky's site, does singing "Spiderporn" or
looking for the bar's points in a garbage can make J&B
part of the "fun characters"? :

Thursdays, March 1 and 29, 9:00 p.m. TC’s Pub, 97th &
Cicero. Long-running competition with fun characters.
J&B plays the role of “team to beat;” you can join
DaBar, Senoritas and others in hot pursuit.

Note: We could do these in 2 weeks??

Mondays, March 12 & 26, 9:00 p.m. George’s Too, 8143
W. 47th, Lyons.

Tuesdays, March 13 & 27, 8:00 p.m. Lawlor’s Bar, 6854
W. Archer.

Wed of that week is in Indiana.
