After reading about the nearly mano-a-mano matchup between J&B and the Bar two weeks ago, it was refreshing to enter a relatively crowded TC Pub last night. I suspect not many of them were drawn by the not-so-enticing Oakland/San Diego matchup on the NFL Network. It was all about the trivia. Tonight, it would be a dogfight.
J&B represented by: Chemical Man, Stix, Nitenurse, Hilts, Gf and Montana
The competition: Bar, Consonants Seeking Vanna, Bump This, and Newbies
J&B has solicited the services of Lawyer to look into trademark infringement by that last team.
First half: TV/Entertainment/Sports
Teri Garr was a supporting performer on this 70s variety show (Benkowski gave ‘73-‘74, but she was on it ‘71-‘72)?
1st Bear with 1000+ receiving yards in consecutive seasons (‘95 and ‘96)?
George from “Seinfeld” was based upon whom?
Two top-billed females in “Dumb and Dumber”?
Led ’03 White Sox in RBI?
On “Happy Days”, Chachi’s first name?
Bears’ opponent in 2001 season playoffs?
Fergie Jenkins career win total?
Who played Maggie Seaver on “Growing Pains”?
Who played Cliff Barnes on “Dallas”?
June ’87- Sox player set team record for RBI in one month with 36?
Top-billed female in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”?
1st time an NHL team pulled its goalie- what year? (Benkowski factor at play for this one)
A “Drink Faster” contest pits an old guy from Vanna against an old guy from the Bar. The Vanna guy downs his beer in little more than a second. STix: “Wow- that’s a sad prowess, isn’t it.”
Scores at the half: Bump 980 Bar 940 J&B 740 Newbies 720 Vanna 610
Second half: Music/Mixed Entertainment & Streets/Food & Geena Davis
Early music question asks J&B for 1988 Record of the Year: Bobby ________- “Don’t _____ be _____”?
Stix is J&B’s Rickey Henderson. When there is a music category, he has the green light. The rest of the team can relax, and next thing we know there is a runner on third. Tonight was no different…until Stix quickly answered the above question with Bobby Brown- “Don’t Be Cruel”. Uh-oh. Part II will provide the actual answer, but this gaffe made Art gun-shy in the music category for the rest of the night. All of a sudden, Rickey was looking towards the dugout for the steal signal.
1996- sang “Fly Like an Eagle”?
Gazpacho is a cold soup from which country?
Bubble & Squeak- what is it or which country is it from?
’84- Geena Davis auditions for this TV comedy show but wasn’t hired?
’85 Best Supporting Actress- Angelica Huston- which movie?
For a music question, someone guesses R Kelly. Benkowski: “I will never ask an R Kelly question.”
I don’t recall what the last question on the board was, but J&B elects to utilize its “Ladies Choice” challenge- the young Newbies concede the “oldest lady”. J&B gets the last 200 points on the board.
Scores after two halves: Bump 1880 J&B 1760 Bar 1740 Newbies 1450 Vanna 1110
Choice of Final Category: 2008 World of Sex, 1997 Music, or Thursday Sports Section
Stix still seems gun-shy about a music category, even though he seemed very confident regarding the year involved. Hammer’s Theorem of Final Category Selection is recalled (a past email in which Peppys asked why we didn’t select the music category when Stix was playing). J&B selects Music.
Two of three wins wager. All three wins 3000 bonus points.
J&B wagers the second place classic- enough the top the third place team if they double their score.
Music- Name the artists for these 1997 songs:
“Honey”
“Hypnotize”
“Fly”
Sex- a recent survey ranked world countries based upon how much sex they have. What three countries have the most sex?
Sports:
Who scored first Blackhawk goal in game vs. Anaheim on 12/2?
Who is the catching prospect the Sox received from Atlanta in the Javier Vazquez trade?
Prior to the ongoing Oakland/San Diego game, what are the two highest scoring teams in the NFL this season?
As Rocky Balboa said to Clubber Lang: “Go for it”

Final Question:

Little drama regarding J&B’s final score- it’s just a matter of how well Bump This answered and wagered.

The next trivia night in two weeks on December 18th- the annual “Stix’s Music Christmas Party”- everyone should bring food. I’m “in”.
2008 Championship: J&B paid for 6 deposits (Stix, Nitenurse, Lazers, Chemical Man, Hilts and Stix ponied up for one extra) to lock in our spot. I think Benkowski wants the rest of the deposit at the next trivia night, so J&B has to finalize its roster prior to then. By my count, we are at 6 or 7 (Stix, Nitenurse, Lazers, Chemical Man, Hilts and Stix) right now. Peppys/Hammer sounds like a “maybe” pending roster need. Dragon is a “maybe” pending flight schedules. I think we need to have at least 8. Pending Hammers and Dragon’s final response, we may need to recruit some players. Vaugn’s name already was tossed out as a possible call-up. Either way, we should try to add a second lady.
Championship is December 27th at Salerno’s- start time by 7:30.

Don't worry, Stix, be happy...but I am in favor of always telling the teammates the answer before calling it out (for all categories: I know I have typed one name when thinking of another, so teammates can stop a careless utterance).
Bears played the Eagles in 2001; Chachi: Charles, Mia Sara in Ferris Bueller? I'll say 326 for Fergie, Joanna Kerns for Growing Pains. Better question: Mike's two hot girlfriends, including his future wife...
