Intoxicating. Again, many readers it think whats the big deal, but the first Saturday in 2010 gave J & B it's second Benky Cup and my first. Benky hosts trivia @ many different bars across northern Indiana and Chicago area, but each xmastime he hosts a communal one where ten teams from his whole stable meet for one time a year only "Championship". One doest have to qualify and it's only one game, but since it's the only game where all meet, it has a very heightened importance.

Historically, J & B won once before- but under very strange circumstances - only Moho and Peppys were involved - and Benky reused questions from the week before regular J and B match. Hey - it's still a J and B win. In the last few years we have come close. Twice we were in the lead going into 'final question', twice we finished second after final question. for me, these 'come close' times we deeply bitter. This game has been something i have wanted for a long time.

We always play this game @ Salernos on Grand and maybe Racine. This year for sure we we weer down a bit- No Moho and Chemical man. But it was a good group - longtime regulars Stix, Lazers, Peppys, Dragon and I. Mike Trivia and Nevin. Vaughn and Nite nurse. Food was great. Stopped the game after the first quarter to get the grub. Rite when we got up there too the food ran out - so we held our place in line for 10m while the new sup was brought up - Benky over the loudspeaker announced rather jokingly our 'filibuster' position, so immediately J and B, already nicknamed "The Mindworms", also has a new nickname, blessed especially by success; "The Filibusters". Gorgeous to me. Food is always great @ this place , too.

Girl crazy. Many women here this nite where I wanted to do great evil to. Hungry for that aspect of life again, been so long.

Game was pretty normal, but had differences. the biggest was in the quality of the opposition - these generally speaking, the best teams in the Benky circut - lestwise they wouldn't' have come to this competition. Also, the number of teams in a regular match usually are 3-5 - here was ten. Because the competition was intense and the number of other teams, each question had a huge importance. Get it wrong and it's bitter - get a question rite that n on else can get - extra especial.

We seemed to be having terrible luck in question choices. there was a very simple category - 'guess the song' where Benky's son would acoustic us a familiar song and each team would have to guess it - two ties we had this category, expecting easy points: instead we got the only two challenges in the game (i think).

Going into Final question, we were in like fourth place - and we had a crisis. We got to choose from three categories - and we were caught between two - three of us wanted "Countries" and three wanted "Birth Dates". Three of us were strong advocates of countries - Mike trivia, Dragon and I - while two were strong for dates - Peppys and Stix. Total impasse, and Benky needs to know soon.

The dilemma was thus: us three felt strong about countries, but the logic put around was that you have no idea what benky will ask in countries - but the birthdate category was one we were all familiar w. and one that offered a decent chance or getting rite if we didn't know and just guessed. The background also was this: I am decidedly not one of the strongest players on the team - i have my qualities, but I defer to others generally. Below me were two others - and they would be Mike Trivia and Dragon. So, we junior members were pitted against heavy vets of 1980's and early 1990 's Trivia. Both factors weighed in my mind and when it came time to give benky our choice of questions - I broke the deadlock and said "maybe we should try dates". The first of my winning contribution in the final question.

The other was this - we had three birthdates to guess rite - and we had to do it in a novel way -live. In years past we'd rite down the answers in the few minutes Benky gave us, and then he'd read them after they were all passed in. this year - this game - he'd question each team in reverse order live (each team had different questions ). So, ten teams, we are in 6th, the five teams going ahead of us, and then us. First two birthdates were Paul Newman and Jimmy Kimmel - I had no part in those and we got them rite. then, magically, our last question was birthdate of Pele - this would be my and only my question, and i knew the other 9 would havnot just have to defer to my answer - they needed my answer. And, w. pele, i had two glorious cross hairs: I knew that he played as a teenager 16 or 17 when Brazil won their first World Cup - 1958. Cross hairs. I shouted out the grid coordinates, others did the math and made like Malarky, and we got the points and bonus.

This is from Lazers recap, published earlier in securityout!:

J&B- 1010- Celebrity Year of Birth (within 2 years, as usual):

Paul Newman- J&B guess: 1926. Answer: 1925. Correct
Jimmy Kimmel- J&B guess: 1966. Answer: 1967. Correct
Pele- J&B guess: 1942. Answer: 1940. Correct

Wagered 951 plus bonus points- up to 4961. The crowd “ooohs” and “aaahs” . J&B has to deke three other teams winning a decent wager plus bonus.

Those “ooohs” and “aaahs” were cool. they were partly there because we went into the last four teams questions now leading - and for any team to reach us, they would have to get rite all of their guesses.

The first three teams got one wrong each - and now we were three questions away. Now, before when the question of which category to choose came up, part of the reasoning to get dates was that it would give us a fighting chance -since there is a 5 year range in questions (has to be w.in 2 years before and after). However, just as easy, a mistake by the guesser could be made. here, live, the last three questions were asked, an we watched. They struggled mitly w. their first question - and then flubbed on their second. Although the word went out to stay quiet if we got it, Mike Trivia arms raised shouting (YEAEEEAAAAH!!!) in the silent restaurant. fne - it's kool.

Felt good. went home that nite after a bit, dropped off Mike trivia @ his crib, and then went home, jangled, and out for a celebratory drink by myself to Lannigans.

great moment in my personal J and B career. There was Bedes when we won. The 8 game streak several years back @ TC's. Glasses and the fourty $ tips to Newbie. The all time hi score for benky trivia. And now this.

Ole!

As soon as Benkowski said the name "Pele" for our final celebrity birth year, I looked over towards Hilts, much like the Red Sox must have looked over at Pudge in 1975, game six, bottom of the 12th. Only difference was, the Pele answer didn't have to be waved fair- it was a clear cut dinger over the Green Monster. Solid play, Hilts, solid play.
