saturday/saturday
took the long drive down to champaign after much hand wringing as only a couple can hang wring...............i was the one who drove all the way, and it took less than 2h !! wait, that would mean i was driving......................it took a lot more time than that, let me tell you !!!
visited 2 bookstores (Paris, London, Dublin, New York, San Francisco, Boston, Washington D.C., Amsterdam, and Milwaukee, the first stop is always some bookstore) and just got snot nosed for all the ancien dust busted about the place. gf wanted coffee, so the 2d place visited was a coffee shop..................then to the game..............................1st time in memorial stadium/champaign, and its a nice place.....................................best was those red jerseys on the field......................saw my old grammer school coach and his son, who was a teamate of mine back in the late 70's and early 80's. Both coach on the team now. lotsa peeps in the stands, both sides. some of the mt. carmel fans from the game before stayed- those catholic league people tend to know all each other ( i'm a c.leaguer, but also the freak, so i don't have the encyclopedic knowledge of everybody who went to rite ever, like a lot of people do)
The Game ??
................was good. Rita was up 7-0 in 3m, and it was soon 21-7 and it looked like it was gonna be a rout.
BUT-
Lake Zurich stayed w/in distance, and maybe something crazy could happen in the end...
BUT-
....a long 4th q drive delivered the game to the deserving winners.............i remember totally the '78 win, me being a little grammer school kid who felt the connexion because the HS would let us in for free to the games if we wore our st. rita grammer school football jerseys............it was huge back in the day, back when Depaul was the most popular basketball team in town (think Illinois a few years back, except every year Depaul was bringing it) and the cubs were actually a team you could root for and still be thought of as.........well, the jive image that gets thrown on cub fans today didn't exist back then..................saw a lot of people i knew=well, a few ( i thought 'd be more), and throughly enjoyed meself.....................................
the long drive back was ok. radio sux, so we list to a bit of a 10 y.o. mix tape blackie made for me (*69, temptation by vu, lotsa stereolab) until we came w/in range of npr (thank god for npr...............uh oh, their spiders will now spot this and send a $$ call to me.........).went to keegans to have a celebratry drink, then hooked up @ the hs for the 2am celebration............................saw cousins, teamates, coaches of past etc etc etc................slept well after dropping off gf late (3am is a killer these days)........................
