CJBROWN

A Rainer Virgil Hiltsbinder film garners viewers - and yes, i did notice that it was billed as a Virgil Rainer Hiltsbinder film.
in todays dcs

manga - Yoshihiro Tatsumi

Been reading lotsa manga lately. Been exploring the Subarb libraries for hard to get movies (i know, redbox or whatever, but i like free from CPL, so I search and wait and plot...). The Oak Lawn library - heavily used by many people i know finally i use it thissummer. They have a lot of book that the CPL system doesn't have - or @ least easy rite there access to stuff, instead of driving up to Portage Park or visiting the BEE branch (Have to for Slim) I lucked out browsing when i got The Push Man and Other Stories by Yoshiro Tatsumi. Wacked out subject matter - sex slaves, prostitution, murder, orgies, abortion, porn, crime, voyerism - Of Course a massive favouite of mine. I read it on a driving trip to KC to watch Manchester United play and I didnt want to sto reading it. Deeply compulsive. Like the subjects he writes about.

It's interesting to see how the Japanese manga market works - here you have these 8 page spread, there you have a different type of magazine, here is this type of mange, etc etc etc... Since i dont have to backing in the history of it, it's all very interesting. For example, Push Man was erilized in a magazine - most of the stories are told in 8 pages. Yoshiro also wrote a book about the history of manga and his involvement in that history in A Drifting Life.

This is a full book - not a collection of comix - and it follows Yoshiro as he got into the comix business - and how the business changed. fascinating hitory of something I never would have thought of as interesting - thehistory of mange and it's genres - but great. it's also kool to follow his life story - espcially having read Push Man - you eally wanna find out where this dude got som out there. Long hauling ass book - but well worth it.

Try Push Man.

Bombshell…or not?

written by Lazers

J&B was back in action at Salerno’s for a little tune-up heading into the Queen of Martyrs trivia coming up on Saturday. During pre-game discussion, J&B finds out that Benkowski and Rich Koz once shared the same agent, who once put them in a room together and told them to “create something.” I think that’s how we ended up with “Goodfellas”.

J&B represented by: Chemical Man, Stix, Hilts, MG, Dragon, and Lazers
The competition: Awesome, Sharks, Peeps, and Auntie Joanne

First half: NFL 2010/Old Love Songs/Blonde Bombshells

Born 1984- appeared in “Horse Whisperer”, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and “Iron Man 2”?

Died 2007- was a stripper, centerfold, and reality TV star?

Born 1982- appeared in “The Piano”, the X-Men movies, and “True Blood” on HBO?

Born 1976- appeared in “The Hot Chick”, “The House Bunny” and several “Scary Movies”?

Born 1975- appeared in “Devil’s Advocate” and “Monster”?

Died 1967- appeared in “The Fat Spy”, and daughter Mariska Hargitay was in the back seat of the car during the accident in which she was killed?

Died young in 1937- the original blonde bombshell got her big break from Howard Hughes?

Born 1989- appeared in “Remember the Titans” but best known for TV “Heroes”?

That last question actually was the very first question of the night, given to Team Awesome, which features a young blond girl, young guy, and an older guy. After the question was answered, one of the guys told Benkowski, “if you said born in 1986, I would have guessed BombShell” (the blond girl on the team). One of the Sharks loudly asks, “she’s a bombshell?” BAM!

Scores at the half: J&B 1000 Sharks 970 Auntie J 870 Peeps 720 Awesome 380

Second half: TV/Really Big Countries/Fattening Beer Products

1st largest country- even after the split- at 6.5 million square miles?
2nd largest country- at 3.8 million square miles?
3rd largest country (per Benkowski)- at 3.7 million square miles (think Asia)?
4th largest country (per Benkowski)- at 3.7 million square miles?
5th largest country- at 3.2 million square miles?
6th largest country- at 2.9 million square miles (though not every square mile of what you think is included goes into that area)?
7th largest country- at 1.2 million square miles (think Asia)?
8th largest country- at 1.0 million square miles (think New World)?
9th largest country- at 1.0 million square miles (the largest land-locked country)?
10th largest country- at 967,000 square miles (think Africa)?

I don’t think any of us, including Benkowski, understood the clue for the 6th largest country.

Scores into Final Question: Sharks 1960 Auntie J 1770 Peeps 1420 J&B 1390
Awesome 960

After its less-than-stellar second half, J&B wagers 1301 with no rationale other than knowing it needs all 3 answers correct and a lot of help for a shot to win tonight. Benkowski is disturbed by the many hearts filled with the word “’shell” on J&B’s wager sheet. Unbeknownst to Benkowski, Hilts had become infatuated with BombShell from Team Awesome, bombshell or not. (bombshell-Hilts ed)

The draft:
1- Sharks select 80s Movies

Nobody selects NFL 95.

Celebrity Obituaries- 2010 (age of death, within 2):

In what decade did the Legend of Resurrection Mary begin?

Peeps- 1420- Music 2000s- I didn’t hear their guesses, but all 3 were wrong- wagered it all- thanks for playing. The J&B Magic Number is 2.

-Thursday, November 25th- Thanksgiving- J&B eats turkey (though not together).

Hilts might have creamed

Written by Lazers

Plans to try trivia night at the Tilted Kilt were thwarted when those scheduled events turned into “to be determined” sites. One can only assume that the schoolgirl-garbed waitresses had had enough of the dirty old man host. As a result, J&B found itself back at the overly friendly Salerno’s this week.

J&B represented by: Chemical Man, Stix, MG and Lazers

The Competition: Auntie Joanne, Mariche, So Long Sopel, Penny Ante, Sharks, and late arrival Awesome. The Sharks were introduced as “one of the greatest teams in history.”

First half: Ireland/ABC Soap Operas/80s Music

This Irish county name also is a rhyming joke?
This Irish county is the western-most one?
It’s a county, a city, and a bay in Ireland?
This Irish county also is the 4300 W street in Chicago?
This Irish county also is a Gilbert O’Sullivan song?
All My Children” is set in this town?
“General Hospital” is set in this town?
Who played Dr. Noah Drake on “General Hospital”?
What year did “All My Children” start?
Who sang the theme to “Ghostbusters”?

After that last question-
Benkowski: “If there’s something strange, in your neighborhood, who ya gonna call?”
Stix: “Benkowski!”
Benkowski: “I guess that’s better than being the something strange.”

Benkowski reprimand: “Auntie Joanne, I’m issuing you a comprehension notice- know when it’s your turn!”

Awesome (which featured two decent, tall girls) wins a “Biggest Tattoo” challenge, with the brunette girl lifting the back of her top for Benkowski to see it-
Lazers: “I didn’t see it.”
Benkowski: “If you want to see it, you have to host the show.”

Scores at the half: Auntie J 920 J&B 660 Mariche 630 Penny Ante 630 Awesome 420 Sopel 310 Sharks 290

Second half: World War II/90s TV/Celebrity Crimes

That’s right, Hilts- categories about Ireland and WWII tonight!

1940- who won the Battle of Britain (Benkowski: “The answer is an army”)?
1945- the Battle of Okinawa involved Yamato- what was Yamato?
What were the British protecting in the Battle of Britain?
The Battle of the Bulge took place in what country?
The Battle of El Alamein took place on what continent and involved what British general?

What actress won 5 Emmy Awards for “Best Actress in a Comedy”?

I don’t recall if this was a new “Ladies Only” challenge or not, but the second half did feature a “Largest Feet” challenge, which Benkowski initially tried to measure without the ladies taking off their shoes (one wore sneakers while the other wore high heels- how the hell did he think he could measure that with the shoes on?).

Scores after two halves: Auntie J 1500 J&B 1440 Mariche 1240 Sharks 1210 Awesome 1180 Sopel 710 (note: Penny Ante left after the first half)

J&B wins the “guess a number between 1 and 50” lottery and will get the first choice of categories for the live finale. The options were: Salma Hayek Movies, African Capitals, In the News, Food Facts, Current White Sox, Celebrity Year of Birth, 70s Music, 60s Movies.

J&B wagers to beat the 3rd place team by one if it doubles. No sense in playing around with the category options, either:

J&B- selects 70s Music:
1977- sang “Higher and Higher”?
1971- sang “Stay Awhile”?
1974- sang “Locomotion”?

Auntie J- selects Food Facts:
Chop Suey was invented in the US by Chinese immigrants in what state?
1st breakfast cereal produced in the US (2 words)?
Average American eats how much food in their lifetime (w/i 10 tons)?

Awesome- selects Salma Hayek Movies:
Her male co-star in “Fools Rush In”?
2002- won Best Actress for what movie?
She kills what actor in “From Dusk Til Dawn”?

So Long Sopel- selects Current White Sox:
At All-Star Break- which pitcher led team with 112 innings pitched?
Last game before Break- 4 Sox hit homers in 1 inning- name 2?
Minimum 26 innings pitched- reliever with lowest ERA at Break?

Sharks- select 60s Movies:
Movie ends with an elephant breaking John Wayne’s bed?
Movie features the song “Moon River” and George Peppard?
Music-oriented movie followed the search for Paul’s grandfather?

Mariche- selects African Capitals:

Capital of Egypt?
Capital of Kenya?
Capital of South Africa?

Benkowski never gave the News or Celebrity YOB questions. Gentlemen?

noise

Lover of heavy weather, not smashing houses and people, but yes to the force of the wind on the body, the darkening of the skies, the wavering danse of the rain...

Continental summer, the sweeping mix of warm air swirling, and these violent outbursts.....

Love it.

From Jacob

From Jacob:

I realize that my response to this issue is a little past due. The subject seems to be out of the public discourse for now. Of course i wonder if it ever really was discussed in public or was it simply broadcast on nightly news. The reason i bring up this subject is because i never once heard on any broadcast, or in public, or from any pulpit (Catholic or Protestant) how God views or judges the topic. And the answer, of course, is that God does not judge. We do. We are fallen. We trust Satan and his minions. We trust the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil. God said don't eat of it or you will die. You will cease to trust my unending and enduring mercy. The apostle Paul wrote where you judge another you only condemn yourselves.
I bring this up because of its importance. I never heard from any Christian or Catholic institution or person on this subject that didn't automatically assume that what those priests did was wrong and they deserved to be punished for it. And i agree, and i'm sure that all of you agree that what those priest did was wrong. But is that spirit of judgement in us the spirit of God. I am absolutely 100 percent certain it most definintely is not. All those priests and all those ministers and all those lay people who sided with the Church and on condemning and punishing those priests have only damned themselves. God knows our hearts and minds. God knows we are all nothing but filthy, rotten law breakers. He sent his son to take the sin, the guilt of the world upon himself. Paul says that whatever could condemn us has been taken from us and attoned for by God. We are to treat the worst law breaker better than ourselves. In fact, we are to treat law breakers like they are Jesus Christ. I never once heard this argument spoken in public on any issue related to crime and punishment. Why? Because the Gospel is never preached in our time. Never!! And all of our institutions, and our entire judicial system is evil. Evil is untrusting what was accomplished for us on that cross. It is finished. Any judgement against James Peters or anyone reading this is finished. My salvation from guilt and all condemnation, from all judgement has been accomplished. I have been delivered from the bondage of the law, and i now exist in a state of perfect Grace with God. So do i now become a blasphemous hypocrite and condemn those priests? Do i love the sinner but hate the sin? Do i judge their actions. If i do i only condemn myself. "Hypocrite", god says. "I have born your guilt how can you condemn another", the Gospel cries. How can we even punish another for their crimes. It would be much more pleasing in the eyes of God if we went to jail or lost our jobs for the argument that God's eternal perfection and righteous uncondemnation (Gods judgement relievingness) and mercy and grace upon all pedophile priest because we are them. We have done the same thing. If you broke one law you've broken them all, the Apostle James declares. Not this Apostle James but the one in the Bible. If we were punished instead of those priests, that would be a righteous act. If the newly appointed supreme court justice declared that she is to be punished for all wrong doing that would be a righteous act. She knows she's done the same. And if she doesn't God declares her a liar.
Anyway, those are my thoughts on what the Gospel speaks to my heart on the matter of Catholic priest pedophilia.

Hopes to try Benkowski trivia (and waitresses dressed like little school girls) at Tilted Kilt again were thwarted, this time by the Stanley Cup Finals. Thus, once again, J&B found itself at the location of its 2009 Championship- Salerno’s.

J&B represented by: Chemical man, Stix, Hilts, Dragon, MG, Jacob, and Lazers

Who sang “Eyes of a New York Woman” (60s)?
In The Who’s “Fiddle About” (Tommy), who commits a crime?
Who sang “Heart and Soul” in the 80s?

This last question led to Stix seeking clarification whether Benkowski was looking for the 1984 or 1987 one, both Top Ten hits. That query was probably one of the several times that Hilts’s friend Jacobrose to his feet and announced to the crowd that Stix is a god”.

Jacob also is disciplined by Benkowski after being overheard asking, “how could anybody know that?”

During a raucous J&B chant, Benkowski: “Remember what happened the last time you did that” along with something about remembering the knives.

Scores after two halves: J&B 1780 Sharks 1510 Logan 1160 Joanie 1110 Peeps 1010 Monkey 700 and Slice left after the first half.

Benkowski holds a random draft lottery for the order in which teams will get to select their category from a group of eight: Superbowl Facts, 80s Cartoons, Celebrity Year of Birth, Miss Americas, Current TV Commercials, 80s Music, 70s Music, 90s Music.

Draft results:

“Dungeons and _______”?
“Danger ____”?
“Best of S_____ D____”?

The non-selected category- 90s Music:
Who sang: Professional Widow?
Who sang: Miami?
Who sang: What is Love?

(Note: for that last 90s question, Benkowski said he once used that question when the Tribune was following him for a story about bar trivia, and the reporter called it the best question Benkowski ever had asked. I don’t even know how to respond to that one.)

Gentlemen?

last weekend

Oi. Wahta weekend. the extremes of life. Friday and Sunday late were reserved for desperate military actions, all plumes and feathers and shined boots riding into combat, but blood and flesh and death strewn me off the field. The Worst of me. Entirely preventable - I needn't really give the orders - but i did.

Saturday nite and Sunday morning were better. Family and frenz. There was the party @ Jokers. Shocking drive way north almost to Wisconsin. Lots of married couples w. 2-6 year old kids and such. What did you expect? - the age. Just a blessed time. Especially important for me is that I'm really slipping off the radar screens of my frenz - it was nice to remember me by actually showing up.

And more- Snowden got married, and here he was telling me @ the peekneek. That's how far off I am - not only wasn't I invited - I had no clue what was going on!

Blessed frenz. Just chilling. And to juxtapose it with the firestorm of horror I created and faced the nite before. Good riddance.

And good food. But, since I was still worn out by battle the nite before, I ate nothing except to shut my stomachs yells of pain. No alcohol. Best site? Way high up, a hawk - not an accipiter, but a big huge one (obv. a female) was leisurely gliding west - well, not exactly leisurely fully, since a grackle was making repeated runs at its back and pecking at it, much like a fight was trying to shoot down a larger bomber in WW2 by trying to shot at it from behind.

Then there was Rockkies b-day party @ that crappy bar on Western. Again, good. Again, frenz, chill, these people are understanding and .... THEY LIKE ME and are not out to hurt me. In fact, they want to do just the opposite - they wanna just chill. SO, it was, again, a great time.

Blessed. Except for the war part.

On Lost

Watched it. Nothing mashing, but I wept. It was nothing more than a 'time to say goodbye' episode, 2 1/2h long, and I enjoyed saying my farewells. Badly dissapointing last say five years out of six or so - but it was time to say goodbye.

So I said goodbye. Funny not seeing it w/ Gf - we'd seen so many to-gether. Goodbyes, yes. Not a bad episode. What I reacted to mostly was the characters - they all, sorta, got back to-gether... sorta, I think.... and they were maybe all dead ... or maybe they were alive .... And it was great to see them all again. Where we could find them.

And/In the End/ there was Jack, by far my favourite character from the beginning, leading and doing good (just like I want to do) until well past ten P.M. Central time zone, until those that would survive could fly off, until the dog could reappear in the series again to lay by Jack so he wouldn't be alone (because it was the end), and we waited until Jack was ready. Right where we first found him, in the bamboo stalks.

Ah, we were all ready for it to end. I would have watched Lost for five more decades was that first season so great - but it was only on for the terminal period that ended Sunday. And, I was ready to say goodbye.

I now have absolutely zero TV shows that I watch (News, Sox, etc don't count).

23 May, 2010

This is The End

Again, soccer season is @ the end. This is the last week - practice to-morrow, two games Tuesday, and a possible friendly Friday. Love coaching - but it's a terrible grind. It was a particularliarly hard year- many reasons made it a topsy turvey year, including the elimination of J-V teams by the Board of Ed, the need to start seven of eleven freshman in thevarsity, and mistakes by me (always present) - and it ends this week.

21 May, 2010

This is the End

Seemed over the summer that The End had arrived. Didn't know if I'd ever speak to her again, and wondering what she was doing to-niiiiiiiiiiite. We got back to-gether again - sweet, wonderful, sweet, wonderful - but for two weeks. Same deal.

And, needless to say, all my fault. It's nothing I did - just what i don't do. She'll be much the better off w/out me.

And shortness of breath, depression, lying in bed, weepy and sad. Wishing.

But, knowing.

That, most of all, it'll be great for her. No reason to stick around me. I'm mud @ this point. She'll be happy and better off. She already is happy. And better off.

Woman, you a-touched my soul, now. Wreckage, I cling to, the cold North Sea wishing to kill me now that my warship has sunk and I have nothing to protect me. What was imminent, no tilting on windmills or trying to ho back in in rushing sea will work.

18 May, 2010

This is The End

Plenty of adverts jamming the Doors song hyping the last episodes of Lost. Loved the show - told before, the blowminding first season, so lovely and lovielier yet - and the horror-able disappointment of the next three seasons - except the five minutes at the end of season four that bettered the entire first season - be it only for five minutes - before this season.

It was the firsts season and that five minutes that have sustained my interest in the show, as bad as the other season have been - not bad, just not as good. But, beatufil friend, it has been - and the end has arrived. No putting it off any longer - we have tonite, and then SUnday - and I am accepting and happy. They are fictional characters in a fictional world, but they are also in a away frenz. Frenz will be missed.

And what happens to Jack? I started to really hate his character - but I trust him. We'll see if my trust is warrented....
